Nakakatakot!!!!

Nobyembre na naman. Uso na naman ang mga kung anu-anong nakakatakot na bagay. Sure ako, bebenta na naman ang series ng True Philippine Ghost Stories na kinahihiligang basahin ng maraming deboto nito. Mag-lalabas na naman ang ABS-CBN at GMA-7 at TV5 ng iba't-ibang horror documentaries. Papalo na naman ang bentahan ng mga maskara ni Satanas sa Toy Kingdom at 168. Magdadaldalan na naman tayo tungkol sa mga multo, aswang, santermo, kapre, patay na bangkay, kamatayan, atbp.


Halloween na naman. Uso na naman ang pagti-trick or treat ng mga bata.


Pero sa realidad, talagang inimbento ba ang selebrasyong ito para kumita na naman ang iba't ibang mall dahil sa dagsa ng mga mamimili ng kanilang mga nakakatakot na produkto, na sigurado ay tumataas ang sales pag-dating ng last week of October.


Minsan ang OA na talaga natin. Lalo na tayong mga Pinoy. Hindi ba't parang child abuse o parang pornography na ang ginagawa natin sa mga batang pinag-cocostume natin ng kung anu-ano? Hindi ba't masyadong pagmamalabis na ang ginagawa ng mga firms na nagpo-produce ng nakakatakot na mga gamit, decor, o costume na paminsan-minsa'y may lead content rin.


Hay, sayang lang 'tong blog na 'to eh. Ang pananakot sa ating mga kayumangging balat at puting bayag ay hinding-hindi na talaga mabubura sa ating popular na kultura.

Saradong Katoliko ang mga Pilipino

Isa marahil sa pinaka-magandang ugali ng Pilipino patungo sa popular na kultura ay ang pagiging masidhing mananampalataya. Lalo na sa 80% ng Pinoy na 'di umano'y mga "saradong katoliko." Pero itong masyado nating pagiging relihiyoso, ay sa totoo lang, malayo talaga sa tunay at awtentikong tawag sa atin bilang mga Kristyano.


Ika nga ng isa kong kilalang theologian, ang simbahan raw ang sentro ng mga baliw sa buong daigdig. Ang article na ito ay nais ipamukha ang ilang mga, sadyang dehins na dehins ang pag-angkop sa buhay-Kristyano.

Una- ang mga hipokrito't hipokrito na ilang beses tinira ni Kristo sa kanyang mga sermon noon sa Israel. Maraming "saradong Katoliko" ang nagpapaka-'sagrado' kuno dahil sa kanilang mga samu't saring mga practice sa pagdarasal at paglilingkod sa simbahan. Maituturing kayang 'act of charity' ang pag-donate ng mga silya sa simbahan na may mga naka-ukit na pangalan ni re-electionist konsehal, vice mayor, mayor, barangay captain, atbp. Kabilang sa mga hipokrito ay yaong mga mayayaman na kadalasa'y naka-habito pa ng debosyonaryo sa Birhen ng Lourdes. Aba, ang mga ito'y mahilig maglabas ng mga santo rosaryong may amoy ng rosas. Ito rin ang mga mahilig kumausap sa mga pari at akala mo kung sino maka-astang banal sa loob ng simbahan. Itong mga hayop na 'to rin ang mga nagsisilbi sa santa Iglesya at akala mo kung sinong kabanalbanalang mga santo.


Tandaan natin na hindi ang panlabas na anyo o pisikal na mga ritwal ang nagpapakita ng tunay na pagbabanaag sa ating Poon.


Ikalawa- ang mga lingkod simbahan-mga kaparian, mga obispo, atbp. Nakakatawa lang isipin na itong mga relihiyosong ito na ngako sa harap ng bantayog ng Diyos noong sila'y damitan ng kanilang pagiging mga Alter Christus ng buhay na naka-ikot sa sumpang "obedience, chastity, and POVERTY" ang sila ring bumabali nito. Lalo na sa poverty. Poverty pa ba ang ipinapakita ng mga pari na nagpapatakbo ng mga unibersidad na ang presyo ng edukasyon ay higit kumulang Isang-daang libong piso (P100,000)? Poverty pa ba ang buhay ng paring Dominiko o Pransiskano na ang kotse ay mga brand new model? Eh ang mga obispo pa kayang, animo'y isinangla ang prinsipyong naka-ugat sa VERITAS (katotohanan) kapalit ng mga malisyosong mga donasyon ng corrupt na pamahalaan?


Ewan ko lang po, Santo Domingo at San Francisco!


Ikatlo- ang hindi pagganap ng mga Kristyano sa misyon nila bilang mga 'Kristyano'. Sa ating binyag ay binasbasan tayo bilang mga "Hari-Propeta-at Pari" sa ngalan ng Banal na Sangtatlo (Holy Trinity). Ang misyon natin bilang pari ay hindi natin masyadong nagagampanan. Hindi ibig sabihin ng pagpaparing ito ay ang pagsuot ng mga habito't sutana. Ang pagkaparing ito ay ang ating pag-aalay sa panginoon ng buhay natin. Ano pa ba ang naiaalay natin sa Diyos, pwera sa buhay nating umiikot sa mga dinidiyos nating salapi, karangyaan, at libog. Ang ating pagiging propeta rin! Maraming nawawalan ng landas dahil hindi natin ipinapahayag ang Mabuting Balita (Evangelio) ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng paggabay. Puro tayo 'salita ng Diyos...Amen', pero 'di natin iniintindi. Isang halimbawa ay ang absence ng Panginoon sa mga binatyilyong nagpatayan sa SM dahil sa bawal na pag-ibig. Bakit kaya nawala ang konsepto ng Diyos sa gitna ng trahedyang 'yon!


Bihira sa atin ang nakaka-intindi at tumutulong sa pagpahayag na may Diyos tayong mapagmahal.


Ikaapat- ang ating pagiging 'party-animal'. Mahilig tayo sa mga bonggang selebrasyon. Hindi ba't sa kahit anong pista, ay mas pinupuntahan natin ang misa ng obispo kaysa sa hamak na pari. Ewan ko ba kung bakit ganito ang konsepto natin sa hierkiya ng misa, eh sa pangalan ng Eucharistic Theology na nagsasabing ang bawat misa-kahit sino ang ministro-saang kapilya o katedral o parokya ay pare-pareho lang. Si Hesu Kristo pa rin ang ipinapahayag ng bawat misa. Isang kaso rin ng pagiging 'party-animal- natin ay ang kumakailan na pagtatalaga kay +Most Rev. Luis Antonio "Chito" Tagle, D.D., S.T.D. bilang bagong Arsobispo ng Arkodiyosises ng Maynila bilang kapalit kay +Most Rev. Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales, D.D.. Ewan ko lang ba kung bakit ang daming ek-ek sa mga taong lingkod simbahan, eh hindi naman sila 'yung i-install. Samantalang 'yung ii-install palang ay tahimik lamang. Ikalima- ang ating pagiging panatiko. Laos na marahil ang isyu tungkol kay Kuyang Mideo Cruz at sa kanyang exhibit sa CCP na nagpapakita ng imahe ni Kristo na may mga kadikit na titi. Pero, sa totoo lang ay sobra na ang ating pagiging panatiko sa mga imaheng ito. At kung bakit ang daming mananampalataya ang hipo ng hipo sa mga imaheng ito sa simbahan sa bawat dalaw nila sa simbahan. Kaya napagkakamalan tayong mga pagano ng ibang sektang Kristyano dahil sa ating mga practice patungo sa mga imaheng banal. Dahil 'di umano'y sinasamba natin ang mga ito. Sa pananampalatayang Katoliko ay hindi talaga dapat sinasamba ang mga imaheng ito, bagkus ay bigyan natin ng angkop na paggalang at respeto.


Tandaan- hindi imahe ng mga banal ang dapat nating ukitin sa ating pagkatao, bagkus ay ukitin natin sa ating sarili ang kanilang angking kabanalan na nawawala na sa ating buhay-espiritwal.


Ang tunay pong paglilingkod, pagbabanaag, at pagmamahal sa Diyos ay hindi ayon sa ating pisikal na pagpupuri-hindi sa opisina ng paglingkod-hindi sa dami ng misa-at hindi sa mga panata sa mga likhang ukit sa kahoy, bagkus ay ayon sa ating pananampalataya na buhat sa ating puso.

Recto Reflections

Our forth year high school batch (batch 2011) seems to be very happy and fortunate, for (still) an understandable reason why on earth did the Department of Education allowed us pass high school without taking the National Career Assessment Examination or NCAE. (muhahahaha xD). By this reason, other high school students enjoyed to have their mere holiday vacation, especially here in the Metro, which recently suffered from Typhoon Pedring’s wrath. Well, for me and two of my classmates, we took this golden opportunity to travel and seek investments for any collegiate school. I was actually accompanying them to UST (University of Santo Tomas), but eventually I asked them to accompany me (to inquire, as if) to Recto, Manila-the home of the Philippine’s University Belt, merely to seek their delight in enlightening through the crossroad path of Recto, through reflections. I believe that I failed, sarcasm aside.

Walking through the ever odorous paths of U-Belt, I saw a sudden reality-reality that for others may be an epic. U-Belt is the living symbol of what my favourite writer, Nick Joaquin once quoted that the true identity of the Filipino is the Filipino seeking his identity. How will I then prove this reflection? Deforming my euphemistic sense, amidst all the fake stuff: those fake electronic cigarettes, sex toys, reggae for sale fashion get-up, and P250 worth of motel accommodation, people still, I mean, Filipino, no, no, metropolitan Filipino people still adore or let’s say, patronize these shits.

Well, proudly, this is the Filipino pride.

And I’m not insulting those people who make tangkilik of these things, because for Pilate’s sake, I am one of those avid buyers of Recto-made products. I’m even proud of those ‘criminal’-rooted vendors, who are trying to earn for a living, than those beggars who unconscientiously use their young kids as mere mascots to make other people feel pity for their corrupted poverty.

Concluding, I realized therefore that Recto, Manila-the pugad of colleges and universities; of low-paid motel rooms; of scholastic putas; of smoking students; of vendor-syndicates; of tambays; of cheap and kalye bookstores; and of pilyong pilosopos- is the main status symbol, or frankly speaking, THE PERFECT SUMMARY OF PINOY POP CULTURE.

In the Infix of Religion and Passion (Part I)

I am a devout Catholic, and I will always stand by its doctrines and teachings that had been circulating among us for about 2000 years. I am also an aspiring artist and am truly passionate towards the arts.

The Mideo Cruz art exhibit Kulo earned different kinds of commentaries from fellow artists, ecclesiastical leaders, legislators, politicians, and from the common Filipino mass. Thanks be to God, for at least, our kamalayan has once again talked about the Arts- the most influential form of self-expression throughout different generations: from the renaissance and psychedelic periods that revolved through time. Sadly, our conservative pseudo-Hispanic mentality keeps on babbling against the work that explicitly shows the ever venerable cross-the dominant symbol of Christianity- with a red erecting penis. In a sneak peek of it, here’s my instant reaction: “For all the saints’ sake, it was a very stupid and filthy creation.”

But somehow, in giving an artistic meaning towards Mideo’s craziness, it was truly justifying to take a second look at it, and give it a deeper meaning- a definition that takes a lot of artistic contemplation and a somewhat, a sense of open-mindedness.

In due respect, with the word ART, I consider the disgusting exhibit as art, in deed.

It is an art, as it explicitly shows the foolish creativity that flourishes from someone’s mind. It truly takes a genius to show the world that kind of imagination, by moving reflexes and thus creating that kind of image by carving or painting- that is expected to catch the attention of our Saradong Katolikong mindset, and thus giving heinous meanings that may degrade the individual, whose sole purpose (if it is) is to express his thoughts towards our unseen polytheism brought to us by our materialistic cravings.

I am caught and trapped in the middle of my devotion to Holy Mother Church and in my interest towards the arts. I have no choice but to be neutral by it, and remain defending the other and defending the other, as well.

I can never accept, seeing the image of my dear Jesus Christ with used condoms, nor (honestly) can I write the word ‘condom’ near to the name of Christ. But as I have seen in one occurrence an image of Christ the King displayed with all the aromatic smell of the hanged sampaguitas, with in which an FHM poster is stapled, about an inch and a half away from it. There are also cases where the Catholic clergymen are mainly involved in cases of sexual abuses, both for young girls and boys. We could also see these politician-hypocrites who are adorned with their luxurious cars displayed in parking areas in churches, that by the way, vows poverty towards their spirituality and institution. Poverty pala eh.

Friends, we have different kinds of being allured into Politeisimo, that unconsciously travels like air, but just that we cannot realize its existence. We consider sex, wealth, vices, and pride as our gods whom we serve!

We always serve our sexual pleasures by passing our eyes with the ever alluring bold posts in EDSA that eventually ends up in masturbation (or worse, buying prostitutes for sale sa Circle). The politician’s dying will towards owning the supposed wealth for the public, thus making him avail expensive condos in New York; that would make her buy and kill the truth that has defied history.

Obviously, we Catholics who are offended by what that foolish artist did are offended because of what he did to the venerable image. But as I see it, it turns out not be an anti-Christian one, as it sends a message not to Christ, but to us Filipinos who made the Christian religion a defending shield towards our own animistic and polytheistic culture. As far as I heard Mideo Cruz explaining that cross, (if my memory serves us right) which according to him is the relic of our race, for we can see through the mirror in the heart of that cross, is our self- the individual who is a part of the race that distorted the meaning of Christianity, even though we were exiled within the church’s wall for about 300 years.

The other major problem towards that art, is our close mindedness that does not help us in appreciating what art is.
